Vegetables are an acquired taste.
If you’re not used to eating them, you’ll find them tasteless and rather unappealing. Let’s be honest, if you had to choose between a side of french fries and broccoli, you’d probably go with the french fries. In terms of taste, the french fries seem like a much better choice. However, if your goal is to lose weight, you shouldn’t concern yourself with taste but rather with effectiveness.
Don’t get me wrong, vegetables are delicious. Personally, I’ve come to appreciate their taste, and they’re a staple food in every single one of my meals. What I mean by ‘effectiveness’ is that certain vegetables are low-calorie and high-fiber foods that keep your hunger at bay for a long period of time. Due to their nutritional value, they’re a great way to add volume to your meals without worrying about the additional calories.
The term ‘vegetable’ is quite broad, and it incorporates several foods that aren’t necessarily the best for your weight-loss journey. As a result, I wanted to list some of my favorite veggies that are extremely useful when I’m trying to shed a few extra pounds.
The vegetables that I’m going to mention belong to two categories:
- Leafy greens
- Cruciferous veggies
*Please note that some vegetables that I’m going to mention may belong to both categories*
When I talk about leafy greens, I’m referring to the plant leaves that are usually eaten as a salad. That being said, leafy greens serve your weight-loss purpose best when you avoid pouring sauce and seasoning that counteracts their benefits.
Leafy greens are great because they are….
- Low in calories
- Low in carbohydrates
- Loaded with fiber
- Filled with nutrients & vitamins
In my case, the best thing about them is that you can eat a whole bunch of them without worrying too much about your caloric intake.
Some of my favorites are:
Cruciferous vegetables are simply vegetables of the family Brassicaceae, which include foods like brussels sprouts and bok choy.
They’re an amazing food to eat because they are…
- high in fiber
- possess a decent amount of protein
- loaded with nutrients

Through personal experience, I’ve discovered that leafy greens and cruciferous veggies are wonderful at keeping me fed and happy. I can eat a lot of them without worrying about eating more than I should. Most importantly, I feel full for HOURS!
Honestly, next time you’re at the supermarket just go straight to the veggie section and fill up your cart. Try eating one or two servings of those veggies every meal and then share your experience with me.
